Fascinated by What I Don’t Understand

Worum geht es dir in deiner Kunst? – Diese Frage stelle ich mir täglich, beantworte sie täglich ein bißchen anders, vergesse sie vorübergehend. Manchmal geht es mir darum, diese eine Linie zu einem passenden Ende zu bringen. Manchmal geht es mir darum, verschiedene Materialien so zu kombinieren, dass sie gemeinsam ein interessantes Ganzes ergeben.
Dann geht es auch einmal um die Grenzen des Bildträgers, oder um einen schmalen Grat zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit. Ein anderes Mal steht im Vordergrund, das Formenvokabular, das sich über Jahre hinweg eingefunden hat, weiterzuspinnen. Oder auch, die eigene Arbeitsweise anders zu kanalisieren, um zu neuen Ergebnissen kommen zu können. Etwa, wenn eine Routine schon etwas zu gekonnt oder leblos erscheint. Dann versuche ich etwas, das ich zuerst noch gar nicht verstehe. I am fascinated by what I don’t understand. Ein Versuch mich selbst zu überlisten.
Und wieder ein anderes Mal geht’s einfach nur um das Tun. Performen. Räume schaffen, Sachen entdecken. Darum, sich selbst überraschend trotzdem auch aktiv einen Weg zu finden, eine Wirklichkeit abzubilden (eine Entsprechung von Wirklichkeit).
Gegensätze vereinen. Eine vielschichtige Arbeitsweise deutlich machen, ohne Leichtigkeit zu verlieren. Das Ganze muss mehr sein, als ich sagen kann. Und I am fascinated by what I don’t understand. Sonst ginge es nicht weiter.

What is your art about? – The question I ask myself every working day, answer it a little differently every day, and temporarily forget it. Sometimes for me it’s about bringing this one line to a fitting end. Sometimes I want to combine different materials so that they create an interesting whole.
Then it’s also about the limits of the image medium, or about a fine line between abstraction and representation. At other times the focus is on continuing to develop the formal vocabulary that has been established over the years. Or to channel your own way of working differently in order to achieve new results. For example, when a routine seems a bit too skillful or lifeless. Then I try something that I don’t understand at first. I am fascinated by what I don’t understand. An attempt to outsmart myself.
And other times it’s just about doing. Performing. Create spaces, discover things. About surprising yourself and still actively finding a way to depict a reality (a correspondence of reality). Unite opposites. Make clear a multi-layered way of working without losing ease. There must be more to this than I can say. And I am fascinated by what I don’t understand. Otherwise my work would stagnate.
